Zambia to Build $1.1 Billion Oil Refinery in Push for Energy Independence

Zambia has signed a landmark agreement to construct a $1.1 billion crude oil refinery and energy complex in Ndola, a major move aimed at achieving national energy self-sufficiency.

Announced on Monday, the project will have the capacity to process approximately 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day—sufficient to meet Zambia’s current fuel needs and potentially supply neighboring countries in the future.

The facility will be built in the Copperbelt province and is expected to significantly cut the nation’s reliance on expensive fuel imports, potentially saving the government millions of dollars each year.

Government officials say the refinery project is closely aligned with Zambia’s long-term development strategy, as it aims to enhance energy security, generate employment, and promote regional trade. Further details regarding construction timelines and investor partnerships are expected to be released in the coming month.
