Renovation of Sierra Leone National Stadium Faces Delays Due to Structural Challenges

The renovation of the Sierra Leone National Stadium has reached between 70% and 75% completion, according to Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, National Director of Sports at the National Sports Authority.

However, the project is facing notable delays due to unforeseen structural challenges, particularly involving the installation of seating.

Dr. Abdulai explained that the initial contract with the Chinese construction firm failed to adequately address the installation of individual seats—a requirement later mandated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Following an inspection two years ago, CAF made it clear that the stadium would not be certified to host international matches without proper seating to prevent overcrowding and ensure spectator safety.

The omission led to a prolonged six-month renegotiation process with the Chinese contractors, who eventually agreed to revise the original terms. However, implementing the required seating has created a serious engineering obstacle.

The current concrete slab beneath the spectator stands, built in 1979, lacks the structural integrity to support the installation of new seats. Drilling into the slab without proper reinforcement could compromise the stadium’s safety and stability.

Despite these challenges, other components of the stadium upgrade have progressed steadily. The practice field, tennis courts, and basketball courts are now complete. The swimming pool is nearing completion, and the hostel facilities have been finalized and are currently being furnished.

Dr. Abdulai expressed optimism that the stadium renovation will be fully completed by November 2026, barring any further delays.

He assured the public that once the seating and structural enhancements are completed, Sierra Leone will possess a modern stadium ready to host international sporting events in line with CAF and global standards.
